Electrical Problems in Automobiles

If your automobile is suffering from electrical problems, you may have one or more of the issues listed below. Depending on the severity of the problem, it may not be safe to drive your automobile. If you smell anything burning, make sure to pull over and turn off the engine. Call for a tow truck to bring your vehicle to our shop to avoid the possibility of an electrical fire.

Accessory Issues

The power accessories in your car, truck, or utility vehicle rely on the electrical system to give them the power they need. This includes your lights, the entertainment system, the navigation system, and the power windows and seats. If anything starts to malfunction, it could be an electrical system problem.

Battery Problems

The battery relies on the electrical system to keep it charged. Specifically, the battery receives excess power from the alternator that isn’t needed in the rest of your automobile. This is what keeps the battery charged. If your battery discharges until it’s dead frequently, you may need a new alternator.

Blowing Fuses

Aside from burning odors, another sign that your electrical system is overheating is blowing fuses in the fuse box. You may end up with one fuse that blows constantly. If this is the case, the electrical system it is attached to that fuse is the part of your vehicle’s electrical system that is having the problem.

Cranking Engine

If you turn the key in the ignition and your engine cranks several times before it fires up, you may have an issue with the electricity source to the starter. This can also be a sign that you’ve got an electrical problem with the battery or alternator. In severe cases, your engine may be dead.

Dashboard Warning

You may also receive a dashboard warning to let you know that your automobile has an electrical problem. The battery light covers the electrical system. If you drive an older automobile, you may also see an illuminated ALT or GEN light.

Scorching Electricity

Finally, as we mentioned above, if you smell burning electricity, the electrical system is overheating. This can happen if the alternator malfunctions and generates in excess of 14.5 volts. Play it safe and cut the engine to cut the electricity production.

Have your vehicle towed to our shop if you are having any of the problems listed above and you can smell hot electricity. We will inspect and test the electrical system to determine the exact problem.
